This describes a society based on creating, distributing and using information and knowledge. It is a society with an economy where the use of information and knowledge becomes one of the most significant economic and cultural activities.
What is a knowledge economy?
This is an economy where growth depends on the amount and quality of available information and access to it. This is in contrast to an economy that depends on production (such as coal).
What is the Digital Economy?
The digital economy refers to an economy that is based on digital technologies. However, it is increasingly seen as conducting business through markets based on the internet. The digital economy is not limited to traditional business models. Digital networking and communication infrastructures provide a global platform where people and organisations create and use new business strategies, interact, communicate, collaborate and seek information. What is social innovation?
Social innovation is about new ideas (such as products and services) that meet social needs ie they are for the good of society.
What is creative new media?
The creative industries include everything from craft, art and design to architecture, film and music. Creative new media means the new creative fields that have come about from technology.

e-Government is the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to improve government services. It’s sometimes called a ‘connected government’.
What is connected health or e-health?
e-Health means using ICT (information and communication technology) to assist with healthcare. It usually encompassing three main areas:
- Delivering health information, for health professionals and health consumers, through ICT.
- Using the power of ICT and e-commerce to improve public health services, such as through the training of health workers.
- The use of e-commerce and e-business practices in health systems management
What is social media?
Social media means the online communications channels that allow people to create communities, interact, collaborate and share content. These can be websites and internet/online applications, like Facebook and Twitter.
What is Web 2.0?
Web 2.0 describes the second stage of how the internet is being used. It is seen as a combination of ideas and technologies that focus on collaboration, sharing content created by users and social networking. Some of the tools and features include:
- Video-sharing services
- Social networking like Facebook
What is cyber security?
This means the measures that need to be taken to protect computers/ICT against unauthorised access or attack. It includes security applications like the anti-virus programmes installed on computers. It also includes teaching people how to protect their systems. ‘Cyber’ usually refers to the internet or computer networks.
What is cloud computing?
‘Cloud computing’ refers to accessing software (programmes), infrastructure (such as virtual servers) and platforms (for developing programmes) over the internet. This is instead of accessing them from a computer hard drive. The cloud is just another name for the internet.
What is the 4th Industrial Revolution?
